NEMO, The First Superyacht Submersible

MARIN Research - The NEMO concept was discovered by MARIN at the MYS 2015. The concept derives from study on submersible and semi-submersible yachts developed jointly by Edwin van der Mark and Harley O’Neill.

The joining of Mr. Edwin Vandermark and Mr. Harley O’Neill has fundamentally redefined the advanced Shipbuilding market by the simple fact of creating the first true solution to Semi-Submersible Ships. On a bigger scale, and with MARIN’s most resent research data released, we may now witness the potential of new markets being developed by the required instigation of innovative products, education and even regulations. The NEMO Submersible Superyachts will be at the forefront to supporting the next economic shipbuilding boom for Mr. Vandermark and Mr. O’Neill, will see themselves in the history books as the ones that instigated change.

There’s no question, we need a new market and industry transformation for today’s technologies are driven by great achievements. If we are to stop and listen, new pathways are becoming an increasingly internal craving of the human being. The current feeling of a new discovery will never go away within the minds of an artist and futurist. Though to be clear, we must all understand the viability of a ship submerging beneath the waves. That is, the current generation needs to deeply envision the potentials of submerging a high-speed light-weight craft and advanced living structures in a way that would allow for increased stability, comfort, security or for that matter opening up additional navigation lanes. Of course, and it goes to say, everyone will also have to understand the full implications and reasoning for bringing the sailor back to the sea in such a way to be partially submerged and encapsulation within a large moving structure.

Out of the partnering efforts of Mr. Vandermark and Mr. O’Neill, the new “Comfort Draft” coined by ongoing MARIN research should help set such the wheels of innovation in full motion. For those next generation students, engineers, builders, specifiers and buyers willing to look for such of a life challenge, The NEMO project has been laid down as the test platform for the first true Superyacht Submersible project. Because of the research currently undergoing, the Dutch government has officially decided to further fund MARIN’s research of Mr. Vandermark’s and Mr. O’Neill’s NEMO project by openly supporting additional studies to better understand the overall viability of such innovation.
